Optimal joint production, maintenance and quality control for a single machine with random failures using Matlab/Simulink optimization-simulation

Résumé

Manufacturing systems subject to random outages are expensive to control. One should find the right maintenance strategy to implement and should cut quality impact on the final product to satisfy the customer's demand. In this paper, we consider the integration of the production, maintenance and quality control for a single machine. The system is subject to stochastic failures that are leading to more and more non-quality products. The inspection details the defective objects and sends them to a rectification phase, from where they become good. The objective is to find optimal production and maintenance control policies that minimize the long-term total cost. This cost includes cost of ownership, cost of lost sales, preventive and corrective maintenance costs, inspection costs and rectification costs. To solve this problem, we develop a simulation based optimization model with the framework Matlab / Simulink. The numerical results prove the effectiveness of the approach. The sensitivity analysis shows the complexity of the joint design of such systems and depicts the impact of its parameters, like maintenance costs, on the solutions.
