L’austérité urbaine : « faire face et faire avec » en Europe du Sud

Abstract : Since the financial crisis of the late 2000s, the term « austerity », initially referring to national policies seeking to reduce budget deficits through public spending cuts, fiscal restraint and privatization, is increasingly applied to cities. While the concept of « austerity urbanism » has been proposed to describe Northern Americancities, this special issue focuses on the cities of Southern Europe, which were deeply hit by the public debt crisis and the « austerity agendas » which followed the 2008 economic turmoil. Many studies have dealt with the collective mobilizations and political struggles that broke out to as a way of « facing up to » austerity policies, and explored the restructuring of municipal finances and local governance in Southern European cities. The articles of this special issue focusoneverydaypracticesandindividual adaptation strategiesof urbandwellers. They analyse the impacts of austerity policies on governance and urban projects, but also on urban mobilities, living arrangements and everydaypractices. They explore the resilience and adaptation capacities of urban societies in Southern Europe, and their ways of « coping with » austerity.
