Une expression du pouvoir des souverains mayas : représentations et symbolisme du dieu Kawil

Abstract : The examination of the sculptural representations of the Mayan rulers reveals the frequency of the figure of Kawil, whether in its most common form, that of a scepter, or in a different appearance. This god seems to constitute the symbol per se of sovereignty and power. This article questions the reasons for the importance that Kawil held for the rulers and the Mayan people. In addition to the most common explanations which refer to the symbolism of lightning and genealogical order, a third reason is advanced: the link that the god develops with generic and sexual ambiguity, characteristics that sovereigns could look for in order to resemble to deities.
